Distortion is the characteristic sound of the heavier styles of rhythm guitar playing. It also adds an edge and sustain to lead playing to help create a soaring tone.

You can get distortion with a single pedal or as part of an effects unit. You can also overdrive your amp by turning up the gain. Some guitarists use two amps and mix a combination of these sounds.

Distortion works well with the palm muting technique.
